Dear followers of the Netflix series Sex Education, we regret to inform you that one of the show’s central characters has passed away. The adolescent show’s Maeve, played by Emma Mackey, may be leaving the cast as well. However, she has already committed to returning for Sex Education’s upcoming fourth season, so you can rest easy.
We learned of so many cast departures from Sex Education following the fourth season in 2022 that its future on television became a source of concern for us.
Simone Ashley (Olivia) made the initial announcement in April 2022 that she will not be returning for Season 4. Patricia Allison (Ola), Tanya Reynolds (Lily), and Rakhee Thakrar (Emily) later announced their departures from the show that year.
Ncuti Gatwa is the most recent cast member to leave the hit adolescent show (Eric). While Ncuti has confirmed his participation in Sex Education’s upcoming fourth season, he has also stated that it will be his last. According to a recent interview with Total Film, Emma Mackey may be the next cast member to leave the show and her role on the show.
After Season 4, Will Emma Mackey Be Quitting Sex Education?
Emma, fresh off her BAFTA Rising Star Award triumph on February 19, expressed some skepticism about returning for a fifth season in an interview with RadioTimes, saying, “Season 5? The fourth one was completed just last week! I doubt that I will be returning for season 5.
I’ve already bid Maeve farewell. It seems then that Emma has stated that she will not be returning for any more seasons of the teen drama.
The situation is hazy, but not impossible. Emma discusses the upcoming season and the possibility that she won’t be back for season five in a new interview with Total Film.
She expresses her gratitude for the opportunity to portray Maeve but expresses uncertainty about how much longer she can play an adolescent given that she is already in her late 20s.
“It’s just always tricky, it’s different when you’re playing a character that is sort of stuck in time. You know, we’re playing 17-year-olds, and we’re all almost 30, it is a bit weird. It’s a blessing because it is a launchpad and it is something that has given us opportunities in different ways but it’s something that I want to gracefully exit from, and be happy that it exists and protect it and enjoy it in the time that it has existed in but yeah, it needs to be left alone now I think.”
Emma never actually states she’s leaving Sex Education, but it seems like she’s done with the teen show. It’s not unexpected given how frequently Emma has been cast in different roles. She’d rather see Sex Education conclude on a positive note before moving on to new and better things than have it continue and people grow to despise it.
In any case, I think Emma will try to return to the part of Sex Education is picked up for a fifth and final season. But if season five isn’t the last, she may leave the show after season four. So long as Emma hasn’t announced she’s leaving the show, we’ll have to assume she’ll be back for future seasons.
When is Sex Education Season 4 Coming to Netflix?
