Kevin McCarthy Career
Interning for Congressman Bill Thomas in 1987, Kevin McCarthy eventually joined Thomas’s staff and remained there until 2002. From the late ’90s through the turn of the millennium, he served as Thomas’ district director.
Working for Thomas allowed him to make important political connections, which he used to his advantage in his first election, to the Kern Community College District trustee position in the year 2000. In 1995, he led the California Young Republicans as chairman, and from 1999 to 2001, he led the Young Republican National Federation as chairman.
For the first time since his initial race for the seat, he faced a Democratic competitor in 2014, and he easily defeated Raul Garcia to earn a fifth term with 74.8% of the vote. He ran for the position of majority leader in the Republican Conference that year and was successful in defeating Raul Labrador, who had been in charge since Eric Cantor’s resignation after he lost the contest for his congressional seat and subsequently resigned.
His support dropped to 69.2 percent in his 2016 reelection campaign against Democratic nominee Wendy Reed, and again to 64.3 percent in 2018 against Democratic rival Tatiana Matta. After the Republicans lost their majority that year, he easily defeated Ohio Democrat Jim Jordan in the election for Minority Leader, 159-43.
He joined 126 other Republican House members in December 2020 in backing a lawsuit challenging the legitimacy of the results of the 2020 presidential election. He voted against recognizing Biden’s election in two states following the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, but acknowledged him as president-elect on January 8 after realizing he would still win even without those states.
A week after the incident, he blamed Trump for the rioting because he failed to intervene after the original TV footage, but he eventually tempered his attitude for fear of reprisal from Trump and his allies. In the reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022, he ran against a schoolteacher from Bakersfield named Marisa Wood, whom he ultimately defeated. McCarthy ran unopposed in the predominantly Republican district and won with 70.7% of the vote in the general election.
