A sequel was released in 2004 to the cult favorite from the 2000s that helped start Anne Hathaway’s career. After the success of Royal Engagement, there was talk of a third film, but it was never made.
Aadrita Mukerji, the mind behind the critically acclaimed Supergirl series, is reportedly hard at work on a story for the third installment of Disney’s Princess Diaries franchise. The latest installment is based on Meg Cabot’s Princess Diaries novels, so fans expect it to continue the story of Mia Thermopolis.

In October of 2022, Hathaway told ET, “I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it.” “Including Julie Andrews would be a huge plus, but even without her participation, I think we could pull it off. We’d fly to her location, set up a green screen, and make the magic happen.”
However, it may be more difficult than that, as Andrews told THR that “it would be too late to do it now.”
“Many years ago, someone suggested making a sequel. I don’t think that happened though. And then Garry Marshall, the director, actually passed away (in 2016), “What happened, she said. “Past the point of no return, unfortunately. It’s nice to dream, but I doubt it’s feasible.”
Mia’s adversary Lana Thomas, played by Mandy Moore, also showed her support. During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, the star of This Is Us claimed she “would be game to come back.”
The Princess Diaries 3 Plot
If the film is meant to be a continuation of Mia’s journey, then there are a lot of potential outcomes. While in the book Mia eventually weds Michael, the brother of her best friend, their story takes a very different turn in the film’s sequel.
However, Michael from the first film, played by Robert Schwartzman, will not be appearing in the second film. Chris Pine as Lord Nicholas Devereaux, Mia’s romantic interest and a possible heir to the throne of Genovia.
The film concluded with Nicholas’s declaration of love for Mia and his coronation of her as Queen of Genovia after he changed the law so that unmarried women may also rule. By the letter of the law, she could only become a monarch if she had a legitimate husband. In addition, the character played by Hector Elizondo, Joe, was proposed to by Julie Andrews (Andrews).
If the story is continued in a third film, we could get an update on Mia’s romantic life and see how Mia’s rules compare to those of her grandmother. More sleepovers are to be expected. This might mean that she secretly wed Nicholas, that Michael is making a comeback, or something else.
