The Orville has changed a lot in its first three seasons. It started out as a silly Star Trek parody, but now it is one of the best science fiction shows on TV in a long time. And all of this happened during a big network change.
What will happen to the crew of the USS Orville now that season three, called “New Horizons,” is over?
There hasn’t been an official announcement about season four yet, but creator Seth MacFarlane says there’s a 50/50 chance that it will happen.
MacFarlane told TVLine, “I hope that when the show comes out on Disney+, people who haven’t seen it yet will give it a chance.” “That could make a big difference for us.”
Here’s what you need to know about future episodes on Hulu and Disney+, assuming you’re all going to watch The Orville over and over again to help it get a fourth season.
When Might the Orville Season 4 Premiere?
As of November 2022, there has been no news about whether or not there will be a fourth season, so it’s not a question of when, but of if.
We do know, though, that MacFarlane and the rest of the crew are already ready to go back to work as soon as they get the go-ahead.
The creator of the show said this to The Hollywood Reporter:
“I would love the fourth season. I know that the whole cast wants it to happen. Many things make it a big question mark. It doesn’t come cheap to make the show. It needs a budget with big goals. But on the other hand, it’s not any more ambitious than half of the other TV shows that you can stream.”
He added: “Whether or not the show gets found will really depend on how the audience reacts. I still think there are a lot of people who don’t know we exist and don’t really know what we are. When people watch the show, they’re almost always surprised, and it almost always turns out differently than they expected. I’m probably the reason.
“Most of what I’ve done before has been very different, but it depends on how the audience reacts.
“In the end, it’s just a business. It depends on whether or not Disney and the platform we’re on think we’re worth something.”
This means that they haven’t started making season four of The Orville yet, but if a renewal comes soon, new episodes could come out as soon as 2024. Remember that MacFarlane has a lot going on with all of his other shows and that the budget for this one might make it take longer than the usual 12 to 18 months.

What Will Happen in Season 4 of The Orville?
The season three finale, “Future Unknown,” could be a great way to end the show in many ways. There, a lot of the big storylines come to an end, like the Kaylon war and Claire’s marriage to Isaac. This gives season three a sense of closure.
But if the USS Orville goes back into the unknown, there’s always room for more adventures. Since she just joined the crew, Lysella’s story on the ship feels like it’s just getting started.
After the end of The Orville, creator Seth MacFarlane talked to Decider about why there could be more episodes if enough people watch it on Disney+:
“When people finally give the show a chance and sit down to watch it, they are almost always surprised and taken by surprise. “Oh my gosh, this is the exact opposite of what I thought it would be… in a good way!” he said. “And I think that if we can get enough of those people to give us a chance, we’ll be rewarded with a season four and maybe even more.
MacFarlane went on, “So it’s really up to the audience.” “Because it’s a business,” he said. The show costs a lot to make, so it needs to have a lot of fans and viewers to justify its existence. So we hope that Disney+ will give us that chance.”
If that doesn’t work, maybe some of the people who work on Orville can go work on American Dad instead. Both shows were made by MacFarlane, and just recently at Comic-Con, the showrunner for American Dad, Matt Weitzman, talked about that exact situation:
He made a joke about the fact that Scott Grimes is in both shows by saying, “We might hire him for the show.” Mike Henry, who is on that show, is a recurring character on ours.”
Weitzman added, “I’m not necessarily looking to do that.” “It’s more or less what works. We won’t look for it, but if it works, it works.”
Who Will Be in Season 4 of The Orville?
If The Orville goes on another mission, most of the following people will be on board for season four:
• Adrianne Palicki as Commander Kelly Grayson
• Penny Johnson Jerald as Dr Claire Finn
• Scott Grimes as Lieutenant Gordon Malloy
• Peter Macon as Lieutenant Commander Bortus
• J Lee as Lieutenant Commander John LaMarr
• Mark Jackson as Isaac
• Jessica Szohr as Lieutenant Commander Talla Keyali
• Giorgia Whigham as Lysella
Ensign Charly Burke, who is played by Anne Winters, won’t be coming back any time soon, though. In the season three finale, she gave her life to save Kaylon’s emissary Isaac. If there aren’t any flashbacks, she’s pretty much dead.
MacFarlane explained why Charly died when he did in an interview with TVLine:
“There was supposed to be another episode between Midnight Blue and Domino, which is one of the reasons I wrote the novella. It makes it feel like it happened a little too quickly.”
“We were all at a point where we just wanted to get this f**king thing on the air,” he said. “We would all joke, ‘Are we just going to keep making this show for the rest of our lives, and it will never air?'”
“Seth added, “We were out of gas, and the idea of shooting another episode, especially one as ambitious as Sympathy for the Devil, which is now a novella… We were just out of options.”
