Stargirl Season 3 Episode 11 Review
Jordan Mahkent may be the evilest of all the bad guys in Stargirl. His return makes things more complicated in “Frenemies – Chapter Eleven: The Haunting,” which is the eleventh episode of Stargirl’s third season.
Jordan shows something much eviler than the chaos of Eclipso or the mystery of Ultra-Humanite. He thinks he’s good and that the end justifies the means.
His insistence that he’s changed and that killing the Crocks was an accident brings up a lot of moral questions. Should he have to answer for what he has done? Or does the fact that they were kind to other former bad guys means that he should get the same treatment?
It hurts just as much to watch Artemis and the JSA find the Crocks’ bodies in the sewers as it did for them to die.
The Season 1 flashback to Icicle’s death is a nice callback, but it also shows how much Blue Valley has changed since he left. As several ISA members went on a “redemption tour,” it became harder to tell who was good and who was bad on Stargirl.
McHale and Luke Wilson go well together because they are so different. McHale has a lot of energy, while Luke Wilson is more laid back. The fact that they are such different people creates a level of tension that is usually played for laughs but takes a more dramatic turn in this case.
Sylvester has always been a little annoying, especially in the way he treats Pat, but now you have to see things from his point of view. Since Jordan killed him and his friends, it makes sense that he would want revenge instead of getting along with Jordan.
On the other end of the emotional spectrum, Artemis and Barbara’s sweet embrace shows how well Amy Smart fits the role of Courtney’s mother. She gives a realistic performance on the superhero show, whether she’s comforting her friend’s child or standing up to her old boss.
Brec Bassinger also does a great job in this episode. She perfectly shows Courtney’s turmoil as she tries to figure out how to balance her beliefs with her hatred of Jordan for what he’s done.
Underneath Courtney’s bright optimism, she has a lot more going on, and Bassinger knows how to show all of that with her facial expressions and voice tones. She is interesting to watch, especially when she faces Jordan, who pushes her and says that she made him want to be better.
