Netflix Buys Its First Game Studio, ‘Oxenfree’ Developer Night School | Complete Info!

Netflix Buys Its First Game Studio

Night School is a game development studio that was founded in 2016 by Sean Krankel and Adam Hines. The company’s first release, Oxenfree, was released on January 15th of this year to critical acclaim. This acquisition will allow Netflix to enter the video game market with an exclusive new property. It also allows for more creative freedom when it comes to storytelling in games as well as movies.

The gaming subsidiary of Netflix has acquired its first game studio, Night School, the developer of “Oxenfree.”

Netflix is looking to expand its relationship with developers all around the world in order to produce unique games.

Netflix is now venturing into the world of gaming. Netflix has acquired Night School Studio, a game developer founded by Telltale Games veterans. School of Thorns is an Australian game developer formed in 2017. Their first two games are both supernatural mystery games known for their barhopping adventures.

Netflix is giving film, TV, and now gaming producers a limitless platform to develop and distribute great entertainment to millions of individuals. Storytelling has long been a passion of mine, and I’ve always wanted to explore whether I could create my own narrative by combining it with the interactivity of gaming. So naturally, when Netflix announced its first-ever live interactive event for filmmakers–Playlist Live!–I was intrigued. “The first time I played it, it felt like both teams arrived at this conclusion instinctively,’ Night School Studio co-founder Sean Krankel stated in an official statement.

Netflix has added the distinction of being the first game developer to join. Despite their Netflix connection, the studio stressed that they will continue to operate as before. ‘We get to keep doing what we do, how we like to do it,’ they added. This shows that Netflix will still give them complete creative control over their projects.

‘The Netflix team has shown the utmost regard for our studio culture and creative vision,’ according to Krankel. Speaking of which, Night School Studio announced that they would continue working on OXENFREE II and generating new game environments.

For a long time, Netflix has been attempting to enter the gaming business. To promote their original programs, a streamer has teamed up with numerous game developers. Telltale Games collaborated with Netflix on one of my previous projects, an adventure game. However, the game never materialized. Until now, Netflix has never had a game developer.

‘Their dedication to artistic excellence and demonstrated track record make them essential partners as we expand Netflix’s creative capabilities and library of games.’ To help Netflix achieve its gaming ambitions, Verdu joined the company early this year. He was previously Facebook’s gaming director before being recruited by Netflix.

It’s still uncertain what Night School Studio’s new role will be now that it is part of Netflix’s umbrella. However, we believe that in the future, we will hear more about their initiatives. The acquisition of Gametify is merely the first step in Netflix’s plan to enter the gaming industry.
