Unfortunately, I must be the one to break the news that Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Eric Effiong on Sex Education, will no longer be a part of the show. Here, you’ll find all the juicy details we shared.
Our hearts are breaking at the news that more and more cast members are leaving Sex Education, which is one of the best teen shows on Netflix streaming. As a result, we’re beginning to suspect that the show’s current run is coming to an end. Who knows, maybe even with the next fourth season.
We hope this isn’t the case but want to be realistic.
Throughout 2022, several main cast members left the teen show, including Simone Ashley (Olivia), Patricia Allison (Ola), Tanya Reynolds (Lily), and Rahkee Thakrar (Emily Sands).
On the other hand, Ncuti Gatwa will be back as Eric for a fourth season of Sex Education, whereas the aforementioned actors won’t be. Whether or not he’ll return for Sex Education season 5 is an open question.
Here are the reasons why we think Ncuti Gatwa won’t come back for a possible fifth season.
About Sex Education Series
A British comedy-drama, Sex Education was developed by Laurie Nunn and is produced by Netflix. It chronicles the ups and downs of the fictional Moordale Secondary School’s student body, faculty, and parents as they deal with issues of self-discovery and growth, most of which involve some form of sexual conflict.
In addition to series regulars Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Alistair Petrie, Mimi Keene, and Aimee Lou Wood, the show also has a revolving cast of guest stars.
The premiere of the first season was on January 11, 2019; the second was on January 17, 2020; and the was a bird on September 17, 2021. On September 25, 2021, it was reported that a fourth season would be produced, with a release date somewhere around the middle of 2023.
Will Ncuti Gatwa Leave Sex Education Series After Season 4?
Well, it would seem so. On Instagram on February 8th, Ncuti posted the following caption: “Final day. For the final time. Goodbye, babies; you’ve taught me a lot and given me a lot of courage; thank you.
I don’t know if you agree with me, but his caption seems a lot like he’s saying goodbye to his role on the adolescent show. When Ncuti told me it was his last day of filming for Season 4, I assumed he was referring to the end of production.
Why, though, does he say “last time”? His co-star from Sex Education, Aimee Lou Wood, said, “My heart hurts tremendously,” as a comment under his post, which didn’t help matters. After season four, I don’t think Ncuti will return for a fifth.
The possibility of Ncuti leaving the show is disappointing, but not unexpected. He has several planned appearances, including a position in the war drama miniseries Masters of the Air and reprises of his performances as Doctor Who’s lead and Ken in the comic flick Barbie.
It would appear that he, like many of his fellow Sex Education co-stars, has moved on to greater and better things.
Conclusion
It’s sad news for Sex Education fans as Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Eric Effiong, may not return for a possible fifth season. His recent Instagram post suggests that he has bid farewell to his role, and his upcoming projects may have taken priority. While disappointing, it’s not unexpected for the talented actor to move on to bigger opportunities.
