Time Lords, listen up! There’s a new one in town.
Ncuti Gatwa, who was in the show “Sex Education,” was named the new Doctor in May 2022, before Jodie Whittaker’s last adventure.
In The Power of the Doctor, Whittaker’s Doctor changed into David Tennant, which was a surprise. This new version of the Doctor is called “the Fourteenth Doctor.”
Tennant will play the Time Lord in three-anniversary specials that will air in November 2023. Later that year, Gatwa will become the Fifteenth Doctor and take over the TARDIS.
Gatwa has teased what’s to come by saying that this season will have “some extraordinary storylines.” Full filming is set to begin in November.
But when will season 14 of the popular sci-fi show come out? Read on for all the information you need.
Doctor Who Season 14 Release Date Rumors
After Jodie Whittaker’s time as the Thirteenth Doctor came to an end, the BBC told us when we can look forward to new episodes.
It’s going to be a long time before that happens, though.
David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be in the 60th-anniversary specials, which will come out in November 2023.
Then, in 2023, “during the holiday season,” Ncuti Gatwa’s first full episode as the new Doctor will air.
It’s not clear yet if this means a New Year’s Day episode or a Christmas Day episode. Only time will tell.
What Could Occur in Season 14 of Doctor Who?
We don’t know much about the plot of the next season, but we have gotten some hints.
The return of showrunner Russel T. Davies, who brought Doctor Who back to life in 2005 and made it popular again, means that things will change.
In February 2022, he talked about his unexpected return and hinted at “brand new ways to tell stories.”
He said: “In reality, everyone who leaves Doctor Who and says, “Oh, I’ve moved on!” is lying. I’ve been thinking about it since I was three years old, so you can’t stop.”
“There are things coming up that are completely new ways to tell stories that have never been done before,” he said. “If it didn’t feel new, I wouldn’t have gone back.”
He went on to say that Doctor Who is special for writers because each episode has a different plot and set of characters.
“I’m sitting here, 10 pages away from the climax, thinking, ‘God, I’ve never been in this territory before. This is strange and new, and I hope I’ll learn something from it,'” said Davies.
“I don’t like continuing series, which is why I’ve worked on 34 different shows in my life. So, I just stopped working on It’s a Sin and moved on.”
He came to the conclusion, “I just like a new set of challenges and a blank page every time, but Doctor Who is always a blank page.”
Gatwa also took part in a Doctor Who Q&A that was posted on Twitter. This was to celebrate the BBC’s recent deal with Disney, which will make the streaming service Disney Plus the home of Doctor Who outside of the UK and Ireland.
He said, “I can’t wait to put my own mark on the character.” He also says where he would like his Time Lord to go: “I would take my TARDIS to Africa, I would take my TARDIS to Nigeria.”

He also said that the location would give the Doctor a chance to interact with African mythology. “I would love for the Doctor to meet the Orisha, which was a group of gods in Nigerian mythology, and I think he’d have a great time,” he says.
He also said that “this season has some very interesting storylines.”
We’re so excited!
Who Might Appear in Season 14 of Doctor Who?
Before Jodie Whittaker‘s last adventure, The Power of the Doctor, in May 2022, Ncuti Gatwa, who starred in Sex Education, was announced as the new Doctor Who.
At the time, Ncuti said, “I don’t have the right words to say how I feel. Mixed feelings of being deeply honored, very excited, and, of course, a little bit scared. This role and show mean a lot to a lot of people around the world, including me, and each of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will do everything I can to do the same.”
He added: “Russell T. Davies is almost as famous as the Doctor, and working with him is like a dream come true. His writing is exciting, full of danger, and shows a lot of intelligence.
“A metaphorical playground for an actor. Everyone on the team has been so friendly and gives their all to the show. So, even though it’s scary, I know I’m joining a family that will help me a lot. I may only have one heart, unlike the Doctor, but I’m giving it all to this show.”
Russell T. Davies, who is back to run the show, said, “The future is here, and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes, talent walks through the door that is so bright, bold, and brilliant that I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars.
“Ncuti amazed us, grabbed the Doctor, and took the TARDIS keys in a matter of seconds. It’s an honor and a lot of fun to work with him. I can’t wait to get going. I’m sure you can’t wait to find out more, but we have to hold off for now because the wonderful Jodie’s epic ending is still to come. But I can promise you that 2023 will be amazing!”
No other stars have been officially announced as part of the new season 14 cast yet, not even Ncuti’s companion. However, that hasn’t stopped Whovians from speculating about who it might be, and fan theories range from Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan to EastEnders’ Rose Ayling-Ellis.
Before Ncuti’s announcement, a long list of talented actors, like T’Nia Miller, Olly Alexander, Jo Martin, Lydia West, Olly Alexander, and Michaela Coel, was rumored to be the next Doctor. Could they show up in a different way? We’ll just have to see…
Mandip Gill has also said that Yaz might come back to the show at some point.
On BBC’s The One Show, Yaz was asked if the centenary special would be her last appearance. She said, “It will be mine. Well, not forever, because you never know in Doctor Who’s world. But Yaz’s story does end in that episode, though who knows if it’s for good or not. What did I do there?”
Is There a Trailer for Season 14 of Doctor Who?
No, not yet. But after The Power of the Doctor aired, a teaser trailer for the 60th-anniversary specials came out, so you can look forward to that.
The most important part of the trailer is the last shot of Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor shouting, “Someone tells me what the hell is going on here!”
If the teaser is any indication, Gatwa may show up at the end of the anniversary specials, before season 14 starts. But we’ll have to wait and see.
