Arma 4 is coming, that’s a fact. The Armed Assault series, made by the Czech company Bohemia Interactive and officially shortened to “Arma” a long time ago, has been known for a long time as the best multiplayer military simulation (mil-sim) shooter. Arma 4 was finally announced by Bohemia on May 17, 2022.
Arma 3, the last full game in the series, now has 14 Arma 3 DLC expansions, with two more on the way. Together, these expansions add dozens of tanks, planes, helicopters, trucks, cars, weapons, and other battlefield tools to the core infantry squad gameplay. If that wasn’t enough, Arma 3 also has a huge library of Arma 3 mods that add hundreds of possible extra hours of play.
But Arma 3 is getting old in terms of PC and video games. Since the game came out in 2013 and is now eight years old, fans are naturally thinking about the future and, more specifically, when they can expect Arma 4 to come out on PC and consoles.
Speculations About the Arma 4 Release Date
Even with the release of Arma Reforger, it looks like we’re still a long way from knowing when Arma 4 will be out.
The game’s developer, Bohemia Interactive, hasn’t said when we can expect Arma 4 to come out yet, and when Reforger came out, they called it the “first milestone on the long road to Arma 4.” From what I can tell, we still have at least a year to wait.
Even though it was only four years between Arma 2 and Arma 3, that was a bit of an exception. Arma 3 was a big change for the series. It sold about twice as many copies on Steam as its predecessor and has been the basis for 14 DLC expansions, the most recent of which, Contact, was released in 2019.
Arma 3 is also a very flexible military simulation game because the engine is always getting better and the tools for making user-generated content are getting better. This, along with the huge number of mods, has made Arma 3 a very versatile military simulation game, and Bohemia was still putting out expansion content for it as recently as last year, in the form of community-made “Creator DLC” packs.
Still, Arma 3’s gameplay and graphics are showing their age, especially when compared to what Bohemia’s newer Envision game engine can do. We think it’s only a matter of time before a new version comes out.

Arma Reforger
In a somewhat surprising announcement on May 17, 2022, Bohemia not only said that Arma 4 was being made but also released Arma Reforger, a “creative platform” (playable on PC and Xbox Series X/S consoles) to test out the latest version of the Enfusion engine and “provide valuable feedback for the ongoing development of Arma 4”
Set on the fictional island of Everon, which is based on Czechoslovakia and was the setting of Bohemia’s original Arma: Cold War Assault in 2011, Reforger’s gameplay takes place in a made-up 1980s where American and Soviet soldiers fight each other using “authentic weapons, vehicles, and equipment” from that time period.
Conflict
Two teams compete to take each other’s strategic positions by building bases and doing strategic tasks.
Game Master
One or more “curator” players set up “responsive combat encounters” for the other players to take on.
Bohemia says that Reforger is also aimed at Arma’s huge group of modders, setting up Arma 4 to be just as open to changes as its predecessor.
So, Reforger has a “suite of in-house development tools” called Workbench, which is said to have the “exact same tools” that were used to make the game. Users can share the modified content they make with the Workbench on Bohemia’s “integrated repository service,” which is called Workshop. Other Xbox and PC players can then download the content and play it.
Trailers for Arma 4
Even though there isn’t yet an official Arma 4 trailer online, Bohemia has released the Road to Arma 4 trailer, which has clips from all the previous games and a teaser for the Arma 4 logo. You can watch it below.
And because we know you want it, here’s that roaring Arma Reforger trailer again to show you more of the new and improved Enfusion engine:
When the time comes, it wouldn’t surprise us if Bohemia made the official announcement with a teaser trailer, and you can be sure that we’ll add it here when it’s ready.
Leaks and Rumors About Arma 4
Given how long Arma 3 has been around and how long it’s been since the last full-scale official DLC in 2019, which was only broken by the excellent Vietnam-focused S.O.G. Prairie Fire Creator DLC in 2021, it’s no surprise that fans have been on the lookout for leaks about Arma 4 that suggest Bohemia may be working hard on a sequel.
Arma: Reforger, the early access proof-of-concept preview game for Arma 4, will be announced in May 2022. This is the first major official development fans have seen in years, but we’ve heard that title before.
Arma Reforger first came to light in January 2021, when a Twitter user named @biostiel posted what looked like leaked game screenshots with an “Arma Reforger” logo. Some community members (at least on the Arma subreddit) thought @biostiel was a real Bohemia Interactive insider who knew about their current projects.
Whether @biostiel was a real insider or not, their claims were quickly cleared up by their tweets, which said that the game shown in the supposedly leaked photos was not Arma 4, but rather an unnamed, smaller-scale shooter project for multiplayer only. It seems likely that this was the same project that Bohemia would finally show the public in May 2022.
Biostiel also said that the next mainline Arma game wasn’t coming for “years.” Since then, the @biostiel account and all of the original tweets that were important have been taken down.
Even after Arma Reforger came out, people kept talking about what Arma 4 will look like. The lead of the Arma Reforger project told our sister site The Loadout that one of the goals of Arma Reforger was to “build a community of experts in modding Arma 4” In the June 2022 interview, the idea of making money off of game mods was also brought up.
